'New Newsvine' Needs Beta Testers

I mentioned 'New Newsvine' over in this article. It may have overshadowed everything else I wrote in it.

Here's what I feel confident telling y'all about it:

  • It's beautiful.
  • It's not like anything else on the internet.
  • It is very different from today's Newsvine.
  • We need beta testers.

We have a list of people, new and old, that we're planning on inviting to beta, but there's a lot of spots open. If you can think of Viners who use Newsvine a lot and you think would both give good feedback and - especially - participate in ongoing discussions, please nominate them in the discussion under comment #2.

****

Edit, 2/2: Viki Babbles Gonia asks here:

Just to clarify here, Tyler, you mean give good feedback to the developers about the use of the "new" Newsvine, as well as participate in discussions with other beta testers and the devs about how it's working, bugs and issues, what might work better, etc., correct?

Yes. Nominate folks you think will kick all the tires on the system and try things that developers may not have thought of.

****

Don't nominate yourself, please. [I mean, you can nominate yourself, but it won't help your case.]

****

2nd Edit, 2/2:

Derails about why someone doesn't deserve beta are not welcome. Post upvotes, just like comments or articles. Not looking for slapfights over worthiness, just suggestions. This isn't a RAV or a guideship.

****

Feel free to ask questions about the redesign here, but as I mentioned, I won't be making a lot of promises and I'll be writing in really general terms.

Beta Fish

Ported question from Elaine-1503791:

Will the new Newsvine address the most frustrating issue of all which is collapsing articles and comments?

Yeah, but by design more than a change in algorithm or a more frequent ignoring of reports. Though there may be more frequent ignoring of reports.

Tyler, since this article is about a "NEW NEWSVINE", I feel okay in asking:

Is there a mobile version of the Vine and if not, is there one in the works. I'm on the go a lot and I find, even with my Android, that the Vine is not very mobile friendly. So is it me and my phone or what?

Just curious and thanks for allowing me to throw that out there. Didn't mean to go kind of off topic, I just figured since we're talking a new vine here, it was a relevant question.

The mobile one I just can't figure out, it seems like it is only for reading, you can't sign in? The regular version on my phone has some kind of weird kink. It won't let me use the touch keyboard, I have to use the slide-out one, but then it doesn't give me a cursor, so its basically a crap-shoot. I don't really care to be honest, I'm not complaining about it, I've never much cared for these types of sites on a phone. Then again, I've always been a little behind the times with these damn things... I definitely prefer the ease of a computer.

And what Spiffie said is true for my Droid also, I have to be in HTML mode, but it jumps all over the place on me, it's like it's unstable or something.

Tyler is this beta going to be different from the last? I've had the "beta column" for what feels like 3 years now... and haven't heard anything in way of updates. Played with the code and column to as much as it will allow it seems. That being said I've had fun with it and would like to continue in participating in the Newsvine's Beta stuff.

Can you put my name in the hat if it isn't in there already? :D

Oh and I just noticed my column is messed up on my recent articles posting. Blowing up my page instead of just having a few sentence preview. That's a new bug I haven't seen....

There's this button, called "Mark end of excerpt," on the Write Article pages. I never have figured out what the hell it does...

You use that button, "Mark end of excerpt," to cut out what ends up on your column. I usually go down after the first or second paragraph and pop that line in. That keeps the images/complete text from showing on column. If you upload/embed images, make sure you add the line before an image that is posted "none"

I need to know what I will need to do as a beta tester.

Comment a lot and tell people what you like and don't like. Of course, we need content to comment on, so seeders and authors are necessary.

Is there a mobile version of the Vine and if not, is there one in the works.

As mentioned, newsvine.mobi exists, but it's not full-featured, and there's no app in the works. Mobile developers around here are working on updates to Breaking News apps. Newsvine is still going to be a site that lends itself to long involved discussions and the laptop/desktop/thing-with-a-keyboard experience is prioritized.

I'm on the go a lot and I find, even with my Android, that the Vine is not very mobile friendly. So is it me and my phone or what?

It's not you. I can use Newsvine pretty well on my Focus but I'm probably an outlier. It's a lot tougher mobile experience.

Of course, if we're shooting for the moon, maybe it's time to dust off this featurerequest (from a "few" years ago). :)

Dust away. *slides out of the way, points at developers*

Tyler is this beta going to be different from the last?

More ported questions from River-239955...:

The is going to be a New Newsvine, and it is going to be for a channel to open up the Beta? And I will maybe still have my nice, normal, cozy Newsvine, or do I have bunches of homework to do?

We're going to have a Beta for a while, probably fix a bunch of stuff, then open it up to the green site [which is to say, not to MSNBC.com or TODAY.com or blogs at first.]

We will write a lot of documentation to guide you along. You may even get to hear my melodious voice guide you through a screencast to explain new features.

and MJL-3:

Tyler can we choose colors for our front Page? I'd very much like a light purple, please???

I don't know. I have seen some mockups that allow a cool header image on your Newsvine Home Page. No promises except that the home pages are really, really cool. Lux does work.

I've used it on my iPad and while I can type in my comment the post button doesn't seem to work. That's the only think I need for the mobile version to work. On an android phone and it didn't recognize that it was a tryping window till I changed to XHTML, interesting. forgot to check if it automatically kicked me over to the mobil version though, some sites do and others don't but this looks like the regular web version.

Edit, and then I can sneak in and still edit it on my computer. It was the regular web version, not mobi, but I can scoot things around pretty well with my thumb and spread what I want to read with my fingertips to see it pretty comfortably.

I post on my iPad all the time, and at first I had the same problem. As soon as I used the "use XHTML Mode instead" it works great from there just doesn't check my horrible spelling!;) Also I stay signed in, on both my iPad and my computer, and it remembers the setting on both (XHTML=iPad; Easy Mode=PC) so I don't have to switch back and forth!

Hope that helps

However I would want to know if the New Newsvine would be a more congenial place disallowing "Grenade Seeding" and the submission of articles meant only to incite and inflame others such as is currently allowed on the regular vine.

I only ask because even some who are nominated are infamous for seeding articles much of the time for incitement purposes only with little redeeming value other than to cause dissention and strife.

I apologize if I am off topic with the question. I was just wondering.

I think the current guidlines are fine regarding seeding or writing articles. What's inflammatory or inciting to you may not be so to others. I can see the politics segment dwindle to almost nothing, under a format that would preclude what you might consider inflammatory.

As it stands now, if you think an article is meant only to incite or inflame, nothing says you have to read it or comment on it. Vote with your feet.

I think if were to be a whole new entity with roughly the same rules / guidelines, the effort would be useless.

I initially was wondering about that myself. I'd like to see a "New Newsvine" that is by invitation only. THAT would spark a clamoring for inductees that would make this article seem very small by comparison. It also would be boring beyond description. Hey! Maybe you've hit on a much needed new rule, for existing Newsvine. If it's not your article, the limit is oh....say.....15 comments. Sounds reasonble to me. After all, after a certain number, we ARE just trolling!

The New Newsvine could be unlimited comments.

Not that the NNV will have changed this, but I'm annoyed by the conspiracy articles that are posted ad nauseum by a couple of viners. They're off the wall, and have a certain entertainment value, but they (the articles and the offending posters) should be able to be tagged by the community as non-factual. It really garbages up the science and tech category.

Yeah, very hard to pin down what is totally off the wall junk science from whatever is just above that ranking. I'm not talking satire or science fiction (in the literary sense), but rather pop conspiracy theories, like, say, chemtrails. Not that it would even disincentivize the seeder, but it would let everyone else know it is just another fringe article, easily bypassed for something else more substantial and interesting.

It wouldn't be fair if all the viners here didn't get invited to the new one. But I don't know how the beta thing worked in the begining of this NV.

The alpha, when they built the framework, was from March-December 2005. In December it went to beta, and they invited people to test it. In March of 2006 it went live, and opened to the public. That was the first release. In 2007 they redesigned it, which would be Newsvine 2, known as Evergreen. This new one will be the third public version.

In theory that is a good idea . But it would need enforcement . Who could be relied upon to have that much knowledge and perspective ?

No one person. It might be part of the dropdown tag list, like "inflammatory". If a certain percentage of commenters vote it "tabloid", then that label would be attached in front of the article title, and all places the article is listed, such as the home page. Some algorithm for hysteresis added in. I'm sure this idea would need further refinement before it would be road ready. just imagining.

I can think of one subject matter where that approach would be abused in a major way . The subject of AGW would have a never ending stream of abuses .

Now I understand the process more. What happened to Evergreen? Is it now known as the current NV? Was it like a working title, Evergreen? When some people write book and movies, they'll give it a working title.

Yep, there are some categories that are almost tabloid by their definition (politics, anyone?). This critique would only apply to articles that are listed with any tag that would denote 'hard knowledge', like science. Otherwise, the option would not be active.

Not that the NNV will have changed this, but I'm annoyed by the conspiracy articles that are posted ad nauseum by a couple of viners

Whoa, wait a minute sky dog!

Wait just one gosh durn minute!

Surely you're not gullible enough to believe that al Qaeda was actually behind 911 are you?

Surely you must be intelligent enough to realize that fire can't melt steel girders?

And what about..the infamous...Building 7!!!

OMG-- Building 7! Oh-- the horror!

All the loyal patriotic workers who found sticks of dynamite there?

All the "one percenters'' on Wall Street who placed options on American Airline stock before the attack??

Any one with half a brain knows that the accusations against al Qaeda are just a dumb conspiracy theory invented by Bush (or was it "da Joos"?..in fact, "Jooish, Apartheid, Gay-Mossadnick , Matza-eating, Sneaky-JDL-terrorist, Freemason-Palestinian-Land-stealing, Islamophobic, Talmud-reading, Lehi, NAACP member, Shylock, Zionazi, Organ-stealing, Illuminati-Bilderbergs"? With really, really, big Jewish noses no less!!!)

P.S: The Lunar landing was also a hoax-- by the above mentioned groups!!

Never happened....however, "contrails" really are a plot by Obama (whom "everybody" knows is actually a secret Muslim who is not even a US citizen!!!)-- contrails rea Zionist plot to control our minds and bodies...but of course the government is covering that up as well)

[Do I really need a "sarcasm tag" here...lol :^]

I'm not talking satire or science fiction (in the literary sense), but rather pop conspiracy theories, like, say, chemtrails.

Are you sure that those are a hoax? How about the government secretly putting things in our water? I'm not really sure about them-- but after reading some of these articles I'm wondering if at least the Chemtrails might be very very real?

Chemtrails: Aerosol Operation Crimes & Cover Up (amazing photos: these aren't planes!)

Questions about current/new Newsvine from LoneRanger01 here:

Tyler.......Here is a suggestion, Change the colors of the quotes. Seriously, light gray letters with a light gray back ground is very hard for the sight challenged people to see.

Quotes look sharper in New Newsvine.

and are you going to put a "contact us" button on your new page....

There'll be more of a customer servicey section but there will definitely be ways to contact us through email.

Ported comment from northern girl here:

Here are two examples from the last week of something I hope disappears with the New Newsvine. Both of these are the opening comments made by the author/seeder. Both comments have been collapsed. Not only are there no CoH violations, it makes following the conversation really difficult when you cant use the green button to jump to the next new comment. You go to the page, and it just sits there, so you have to scrool through over 120 comments on the first thread to get to the new one, and then scroll down the page, or sometimes into the next page, to get to the next comment. And its all because someone didnt like the article/seed.

Two problems: inaccurate reporting and collapses screwing up tracking. Both should be salved - if not solved - by New Newsvine.

mightyj-- I think one of the reasons that millions of people are dying every minute from these conspiracies is that they are under the illusion that these protective hats are very difficult to construct.

That they are even more difficult to find-- and very few stores even carry them!

I see some suggestions have been offered in this sub-thread, so if I may;

  • Change link text from underlined bold to underlined light face in color (green would be good).
  • Add caption bar to photos posted in seeded articles.
  • Enable ability to delete/change photos in seeded articles once posted.
  • Enable ability to add more than one photo to seeded articles.
  • Provide ability for author/seeder to check comment as read w/o voting up comment.
  • Add toolbar w/spellchecker to "Contact Us" and "Contact this author" boxes.
  • Add avatar of writer to comments posted.
  • Provide link back to published articles after they have been edited.

It would be good if some of these changes could be made on this existing version, while we're waiting for the "New Newsvine" to be rolled out.

Would this be a good idea? The very deserving viners who have earned a RAV should be given more "everyday" recognition than only seeing the full vine on their column. On comments, guides have a colour, and now I see a compass. Perhaps a full vine could show on the comments of RAV recipients.

Jerry, I think they must be getting ready for that already. One day I saw some of that experimentation happening on Newsvine comments; the same thing we see on MSNBC comments. It's as if they experimented 'out there' first. I'm guessing at something else... that we'll not only see the avatar at the top of the comment box, but we'll probably see some kind link-sharing with the other tabs, i.e. FB, Twitter, Google+, etc. in that same comment box bar. Perhaps the ISP would be based here, but we could ship out our comment to a multiple of sites (if someone wanted to), but, for tracing purposes... they would all link back here... just guessing.

    Have you tried

    http://www.newsvine.mobi/

    Yeah , it sucks.

There is a reason why I'm not on HuffPo - their mobile site is so lobotomized that it is a waste of my time since I surf most of the time on my android. The regular newsvine on my droid works fine for everything but posting a comment and I'll get that worked out when I figure out why the android browser hates the little html buttons so much. (read article doesn't appear, but works if you hit the spot where it would be - I haven't gotten the post comment button to appear or work the same way)

I don't spend $70 a month for a full featured smartphone so I can sit at the damn kiddie table.

we may have a smaller group to test the new group functionality.

It's not a small group, but Newsvine Photographers has lots of "beta" users now so we're used to trying out new stuff... please consider.

I do have a smaller group, The Ozarks that I'd like to throw out a nomination for testing...

When are you planning on making your final picks for the testers

Probably a few weeks before the beta, so hopefully towards the end of the month.

and how will you be notifying them?

Probably through 'Contact this Author', but maybe Blog or I will post a list, too.

I think storyartist has established that many deserving nominees have been omitted, not just the ones starting at comment #47. Not all nominees will be aware that their name was omitted, or such omitted nominees might not want to put their own name into the ring in order not to appear self-promoting, in which case the list would not be somethng upon which Tyler can rely.

    C.K.

BTW, everyone I would nominate has already been tossed to the BETA fish Tyler has constructed but I would add that anyone not specifically named above or below should be considered simply because they have shown the interest in making the Vine a better place just by contributing to this thread alone.

Who better could we find than those around us now?

You're welcome! It just makes sense to have you as part of the team. You're analytical enough that you will communicate with others on the team rationally. You are inquisitive enough that you will push every button and check out every feature uncovering potential bugs, you are on the site with decent frequency and you've already shown through some of your articles that you have a sincere desire to see site improvements.

It's a no-brainer to have you on the team. The rest of us would be in good hands if you were. Here's hopin' you get the nod. (tips glass)

Perrie hasn't actually left-- she's just been a lot less active here since she's busy with her own site. Occasionally she does stop by -- especially to say "hello" to old friends. (See, for example, HERE and HERE).

It's not a small group, but Newsvine Photographers has lots of "beta" users now so we're used to trying out new stuff... please consider.

Whoops, missed this. It'd be more like an all-new group. Besides, if we moved NVP to Beta, it'd deprive a lot of folks from seeing your beautiful shots.

It's not a feature, borehead. It would just be during the beta phase, for testing purposes. Once the beta is over, and everyone gets moved to the New Newsvine, the old Newsvine will disappear and we'll all have New Newsvine.

I may be wrong, but think of it as two separate websites. One will be the Newsvine you use now, and the beta/testing of the New Newsvine will be happening elsewhere. Then all the bugs will be squashed, and everyone will get the New Newsvine.

I think you'll only have to seed once - or perhaps it'll be a checkbox. [Insert even more political hedging here.] I was just answering the prospect of moving a whole group into the beta, which I imagined to make them like the beta discussions...

Will seeds/articles on the beta version also appear on the Vine?

which won't be visible to non-beta members.

I should hope not. Don't think the developers would make you go in the module more than once.

I'm not sure if that makes me happy, or scares the crap out of me. Change is good. And in this case, I suspect it's really good...given your excitement over the "New Newsvine". But change doesn't come easy for a lot of people.

Are the changes going to be so robust that people will no longer have the 'feeling' that they are posting on Newsvine?

Oh...One thing I was wondering about...I really appreciate the authors that put up original content and think it's a shame that 'Top Seeds' get a prime spot on the Newsvine front page while 'Featured Columnists' are buried down in the lower right hand corner. Will that change?

You can move those, Pat. My Featured Columnists is up top right. And I deleted the Top Seeds module all together. My front page is Featured Columnists, plus the headline story (which you can't get rid of), plus modules I've created using the RSS feeds for all of the groups I am admin for, plus a couple that I belong to. And nothing else. I don't have any of the standard category modules on my front page anymore. I prefer to find my content elsewhere (usually original articles).

To move your modules around, just drag them. To delete a module, click the X in the top right corner of the module box. To add modules, click the "Add a news module" button (it's green) in the top right of the white space below the main header.

You can add a module for anything you have an RSS feed link for. It's pretty cool. I used to have modules for some blogs I follow.

I'm also curious how some of the top seeds are calculated. I thought at one time it was by vote, but often I have seen articles that no one has really commented on. There seems to be some hurdle that new authors need to overcome to get their articles recognized.

Will it check similar articles put out by different news organizations? I know that is one of the ways people get around the duplicate checker -- one posts the CNN version, another posts the MSNBC version, and another posts the AP version...all of the same event with the exact same wording since the CNN and MSNBC basically are reprints of the AP version.

The duplicate checker also pulls up unrelated/old articles, based solely on the words it searches under. Once I didn't seed an article, only to realize later, when I looked at the seed it referred to in detail, that it was over a year old. Hope that can be looked at as well.

Just adding another POV -- that the different versions seeded by different viners is often a plus. I know when something comes in the news cycle and 1st seed is by someone who is a more lax moderator, or attracts a slew of trolls type moderator, then I wait until someone else grabs a seed from somewhere else, and discuss what I want there. It gives everybody a place where we're more comfortable, for less squabble.

I'll agree with SA here. I don't mind dupe seeds too much. Some moderate differently/better than others. And I've probably encouraged people to seed something themselves if they didn't like the way a discussion was being handled (or not handled) on someone else's seed. I think there's room for more than one discussion about the same topic.

True, but if you're not one of the more prominent seeders, you can fire the same thing off three hours before one of them does, and no one will see yours, but a hundred people will see their's. It would be nice if the discussions were spread around more.

And thank you, thank you, thank you for the front page pointer. Tidied mine up last night, looks much better!

True, but if you're not one of the more prominent seeders, you can fire the same thing off three hours before one of them does, and no one will see yours, but a hundred people will see their's.

That would have more to do with how many people are on your friendslist and how many people have you on their watchlist...wouldn't it?

Example: There is a Viner that is notorious for seeding and running. They have over 5,000 seeds to their name and they've only been a member since 2009. A look at their friendslist reveals very few people and most of their seeds get very little traffic, save for an exception or two (a recent one being food stamps...a hot button issue).

By contrast, I've seen people put up immensely popular articles/seeds, that seed/write very little, but have a large friendslist and are on multiple watchlists.

Oh yeah? I have no idea... that didn't happen to me personally, I just remember a couple weeks ago I stumbled across a good article from someone I didn't know. I left a comment or two, contributed to the dozen or so total. Then I saw the same article a few hours later on the front page from somebody else with fifty comments almost immediately. (Yes, checked the timestamp). I felt bad for the person who seeded it earlier, they should have had that traffic I thought.

Believe me when I say Friends and Watchlist have little effect on traffic generating Front Page prominence. It is more about good timing than anything.

    • There is a window of opportunity that is affected by several factors mainly of which are the auto-seeds from AP and MSNBC. Morning, noon, and night they update. In the morning, this usually occurs between 4:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., again from around 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and in the evenings around 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. If it is a slow news day, the noon and evening updates will be smaller or not happen at all....Publishing during those times will get you pushed down the list PDQ! So fast sometimes that it will look like you never even posted anything at all!
    • .
    • The second factor is how many other Viners are seeding material during the hours the "auto-seeds" aren't gobbeling up the front page. If there are many people seeding/writing who DO have a higher "Friends" and "Watchlist" count than yours, you will get bumped down the list quickly.
    • .
    • Another factor is those who are prolific seeders but poor Moderators. They also will quickly dump a bunch of crap and then ignore it. If you see they have already done their usual bit of dumping on the Vine, then proceed to Seed! If not, wait a little bit to see if they are going to do their thing. Be sure not to miss those "windows of opportunity" I pointed out in the first point!
    • .
    • Keep this in mind, if you've already posted one article or seed under one of the pages like "Politics" or "Entertainment", only that one will show up. You must wait 24 hours (?) before posting another one otherwise; you are wasting your time.
    • .
    • And of course the final factor is how many people are following your stuff. Build your "Friends List". Publish good articles. Be nice when Moderating. And above all BE FAIR! We've got enough Moderators here who will delete personal attack comments just because they don't agree with or like the Viner while turning a blind eye to their "Friends" and supporters violations...

Oh yeah, one other thing: Some days the Vine wakes up on the wrong side of the Garden and just HATES you...or at least it does me! X^P

I'll agree with SA here. I don't mind dupe seeds too much.

    I also agree.

If you look at a seed as merely a news item (something that usually is about breraking news, or new developments in an ongoing news story) I suppose you could argue that's there's little value in a duplicate post of that.

However, the value in a seed actually comes from two things-- its not just the news story itself. Its also a discussion about the story. And often some of the comments in the discussion are just as valuable as the news story itself. Sometimes even more so.

The comments in two different seeds-- in fact the whole direction of the discussions-- might be very different-- sometimes providing a lot more of value than just one discussion would.

Then I saw the same article a few hours later on the front page from somebody else with fifty comments almost immediately.

Timing can be everything. It may not necessarily be who seeded to first so much as who seeded it at the right time for it to be noticed by others. Could be the other seeder has a larger friend list or it could be that the first person who stumbled across it and commented is on a lot of watch lists and that brought the traffic.

One of the tips to seeding is to comment on your own seeds when you post them, to get them on the convotracker of people watch listing you.

that the different versions seeded by different viners is often a plus.

We don't want to discourage duplicate seeds - the challenge is getting the system to mark the seeds as duplicated so the first one gets more shine. Less of an issue in the next incarnation because the front page is way different.

That's partially a group moderation issue.

Duplication of content to groups is rarely malicious, but it can be annoying to members if they're bombarded with the same content repeatedly.

A moderator can remove the dupes, but if you're getting immediate notification of new content, you're still going to wear the crapflood.

Does having someone on our watchlist generate a tracking?

Sorry CL1 just saw the question. The answer is Yes, it does. It avoids the complications of "friending" them in order to just follow their comments/articles/seeds. To quit tracking them, simply remove them from your watchlist.

    Thanks, C K!!

I hadn't realized that before... just thought it was a personal list for our own benefit. Now I know why there are so many trackings that caused me to wonder why they were tracked, as I thought trackings only resulted from 'friending.'

Just for clarification...having someone watch listed only notifies you if they have written an article or seeded something, right? In order for them to show up on your convo tracker, they have to be friended??

Ahh, Ok, they have to be friended, too. Thanks to both of you!

Wait a minute, if they are already friended, then what is watchlisting causing that the friending didn't already cause?

Does the friend list only track comments, and the watchlist only tracks articles/seeds??

If so, I didn't know that until just now!

Actually, that's a good point. Friending someone pretty much covers all the bases. Articles, seeds and comments.

I suppose the Watch List would come in most handy when you prefer not to friend someone.

Yes, that's how I've been using the watch list, for the most part.

If someone writes an article and doesn't leave the first comment, then having them watch-listed would pick it up for the tracker, perhaps.

Watchlist also sends you an email, if you have that function turned on. Can't do that with the tracker. You can select on your email notification, from the list there, even if you want just 1 or 2 individuals from your watchlist to generate an email.

Go to the bottom of this page where the "leaderboard" used to be accessed. The next tab to the right is "email notification." The settings are there to check your watchlisted users, and your groups are listed. In both cases, this isn't about comments, it's about posting a new article/seed.

However, I would be glad to start a group just to test the "beta" if you like. Just let me know

They have a "Beta" group we used for the last beta with the new columns but didn't get used much. Maybe you could take over that one?

why can't people nominate themselves to fill empty spots. Seems to me you want a cross section of Newsvine and lets face it - not everyone is part of the inner circle of Newsvine friends.

On a side note: I agree Jazzman, Pat. N, CL1, Belle42, would be excellent Beta testors. One or two of the others that have been mentioned...hmmmm...may not as much but you do need a mix of people from all levels of the vine.

And only if I can make a nomination or two of my own, and I do mean everyone here who added to lauhal's nomination of this poor wretch too! That you're here and added your names is testimony enough for me you all care a great deal about our Vine!

I don't know Jerry...I think people that DON'T know what they're doing would be better testers -- they can break the system in ways normal people would probably encounter (and that programmers wouldn't normally think of) :)

beta testers usually represent all skill levels. Lower skill levels give good 'ease of use' feedback, and sometimes stumble on pieces of broken code where a more experienced person would never look. More experienced users know where the system has been lacking, and can wring it out expertly.

I guess sorta what belle said, only typed more slowly.

MW -- I only know that from experience, I break things at work all the time, but luckily I KNOW how I broke them so I can either fix it or tell tech how I broke it so they can tell me how to fix it (like CTRL-ALT-DEL, the ultimate fix-all) :P

:-) I can spend 1 month designing an application and 5 months testing it. But Give a curious user 15 minutes and they'll break it. It's the "Hey, what's this do, mentality".

No developer can anticipate all the ways that an app/site can be viewed/used, by the many.

Often, what is intuitive to one is not to many.

I think most developers would agree that, much like a trial attorney going into a courtroom, much of the work is done before we "go in."

It is much easier to critique, discuss and modify, before development, than it is to go back in and rearchtitect after the app/site is built.

(Ving Rhames has one in his mouth as he is being anally raped)

Maybe you could describe this in greater detail. I'm not quite sure I have the picture. Is this what the Beta tester will be doing? Or is anal sex what qualifies? Or is it what he has in his mouth? I'm missing your point off what this has to do with Tyler's article.
