The CoH Militia should disband, and we should take its place.

This is my first big challenge as Moderator, and it began before I was here, partly due to the departure of my predecessor.

It got messy here, philosophical here, and really productive here.

The group is currently located here.

I want to thank everybody for their contributions on the issue, particularly the authors of those three threads above and David Mc Girr, the Militia's founder.

Here's the Militia's mission statement, if you will:

I think the Militia has done - is still doing - a good job of pushing back against the tide. Several members of the group are users who have impressed me already. I owe everyone, Militia or no, who did their best to self-police in the Era of No Moderator, a 'thank you'.

But it's time to move on.

The precepts behind the Militia - vigilance towards CoH violations and those who come to Newsvine with malicious intent - are not something to be owned by any group, but to be shared by all Viners. The distinction between the Militia and everyone else has overwhelmed how worthwhile its users' efforts actually are.

I've heard in threads and through email the hurt feelings that users in and out of the group have about the Militia's disbanding, and I hope that most can understand why I strongly encourage the Militia to go their separate ways, enjoy the specific community of other groups, like the outstanding Newsvine Help, and the larger community of Newsvine, and to do your best as individuals to combat the tides.

Use the tools you currently have - the ! button, emailing me directly - carefully and thoughtfully. Like Newsvine itself, reporting is a meritocracy - users who over-report or report to fit an agenda, I'll end up ignoring. Consistently helpful users, like Red Wolf, Tedd Riggs and others, I'll shout out and rely on.

I will do my best to listen to suggestions when I work with the team to offer you more tools - better tools, but for now, please use those rather than escalating within threads.

I need all of you to help, and I think that having a designated group focusing on upholding the CoH is redundant - we should all focus on treating other right.

Please use this thread to voice concerns, ideas, issues, reactions...I'll be responding and moderating.
